Scottish Art - Paintings of England, Too:
Stonehenge Standing Stone Circle
by D. Bruce Bennett
Moody Stonehenge
Located farther south in "Celt-dom" than most of our images is the scene portrayed in this painting of England. While Stonehenge Standing Stone Circle is firmly planted on the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, its origins and purpose have been shrouded in the mysterious past for years.

Up until the summer of 2006, there was plenty of speculation. Druid temple? Monument to King Arthur? What? Now, archeologists are fairly certain Stonehenge was part of a large religious complex for sun-worshipping ancients, as far back as 2600-2400 B.C. Fascinating stuff, isn't it? And it just makes this painting of England, executed in oil painting style, all the more mysterious.
Have someone on your gift list who's spent some time studying about ancient standing stone circles - or would, if they had the time? They need a painting similar to this one on their wall. Have you visited Stonehenge Circle yourself, but your photos show the fence around it, the tourists, and other bits and bobs?
Why not commission your own version of "Moody Stonehenge"? You'll be in good company. Bruce has been commissioned several times to paint a variant of this misty, moody, mystical version of Stonehenge. (See the others on our Standing Stones page, which includes the still-available Gray-Day Stonehenge.)
