Scottish Art - Paintings of Scotland:
Stonehaven Harbor

by D. Bruce Bennett

Fierce Storm, Safe Harbor

Fearsome, heavy, charcoal storm clouds loom over a placid, gray-blue harbor. Indeed, this very harbor has been called the only safe haven along the east coastline of Scotland, south of Aberdeen, during a northeasterly gale. In a few more minutes, the water will be reflecting the storm's ferocity and these two little pleasure boats will be bobbing. But for now, they're calm.

Looking like so many other Scottish fishing villages, this quiet harbor has been a popular destination point for many centuries. But it isn't just any fishing village or one from Bruce's imagination: it's Stonehaven (the Stonehaven famous for its Highland Games).

The white building in the center of this long, horizontal picture of Scotland is The Ship Inn, built in 1771. Who knows how many mariners and tourists have quenched their thirst within its walls? It predates The Marine Hotel (to the left of The Ship Inn and painted white only on the street floor level), built in 1884. It predates the Town House behind it, as well, with its easily recognized spire, built in 1790.

They're all newcomers, though, compared to The Tolbooth (stone building to the far right with the black exterior staircase) which now houses a museum of local history and fishing. Stonehaven's oldest building, it was built as a storehouse during the construction of nearby Dunnottar Castle. (See Bruce's large Dunnottar Castle Ruins original artwork and his smaller painting, Fields of Dunnottar.)

A powerful scene as it stands, unmatted and unframed, it will need matting and framing that can hold its own with the powerful sky. A room décor of earthy tones with touches of black and charcoal will offer this Scottish Art an appropriate stage for viewing.
